Unlocking the Potential: The Critical Role of Interoperability in Advancing Digital Pathology

Dr. Andrew Evans, MD, PhD, FCAP, FRCPC, is Medical Director of Laboratory Medicine and Chief of Pathology at Mackenzie Health, a large community hospital serving York Region and home to one of Canada’s first fully digital pathology departments. He is also an Associate Professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Evans has been at the forefront of digital pathology and whole slide imaging in Canada for more than two decades. Prior to joining Mackenzie Health, he served as Consultant in Genitourinary Pathology and Director of Digital Pathology at University Health Network from 2001 to 2020.

He has played a key role in the development of clinical guidelines and best practices for digital pathology through the College of American Pathologists (CAP), including chairing the expert panel for the 2021 CAP WSI Validation Guideline and serving on the CAP Artificial Intelligence Committee and Council on Informatics and Pathology Innovation.

His contributions to the advancement of digital pathology — particularly whole slide imaging and AI-enabled diagnostic tools — were recognized with the 2021 CAP Meritorious Service Lifetime Achievement Award.
